Dad, Run with Me?

This was the content of the email I sent to my Dad and Mom on April 20th of this year:

Subject:  Seawheeze 1/2 Marathon

Just sign up!  I’ll run it with you the whole way!

That was it!

One week later, I called Dad to badger him about it thinking there is now way but why not?  And what?!  He responded that he had signed up.  He was coming to Vancouver to rock 13.1 miles with me in August.  Just me and Dad!   Mind you, my Dad is not a long distance runner.  I think the length of the basketball court was/is the name of his distance game.

So, I am sitting in the airport in Phoenix last night on a layover + delay, thinking about the 8 days to finish line.  The evening before, my Dad and I had went for a quick interval run together in Houston – hello humidity, hello sweat.  However, I noticed he had gotten so much faster.  And, he was looking good!  13 pounds later, he said his clothes were fitting better.  High five, Dad!

Anyways, back to sitting there in the airport,: I was listening to people complaining about the delay, handling restless children or throwing back a couple brewskies at the bar …  And all of a sudden, I feel tears start to well in the bottom of my weird-timing-for-everything eyelids.  Such a sap.  But, I was just overwhelmed with gratitude, excitement and love.

One email, one action, sweaty runs together to tears in an airport to a future finish line.

What I want you to know is that, you just never know until you ask.

I’m so happy I asked.

Adventure: Sweat Together

I have said it before and I know I will say it again (and again).

A couple that sweats together, stays together.

I met up with my main squeeze today for my first 1:1 coaching session with him at his local CrossFit Box.  I have been breathing and flowing on my blue yoga mat for the past 3-4 months – so needless to say, hardest.workout.ever.

But amidst the sweat + heart beating out of my throat + hating with sheer force jump roping double unders + wanting to be done after round 1 and having 7 more to go… what really happened was we sweat together, we spent quality time together, he was my coach and I got to enjoy the loving-his-life-boyfriend of mine, when he is smack dab in his passion meets best life zone.   And, as I came to my last round of the workout (Chris finished over 9 minutes before me but stood there cheering me on), I did two of these special jump rope styles in a row.  We both paused, I looked up smiling and he was so proud of me.  Made it all worth while.  Sweet love in a sweat.

Beautiful.

Sweet Love in a Sweat

Adventure: A Couple that Sweats Together, Stays Together!

So this past weekend, Chris and I embarked on our adventure!  We cycled from Mundelein, IL to Chicago, IL on Sunday morning!  Google maps declared it a little under 40 miles and an estimated arrival time within 3 hours and 20 minutes.

Sounds like fun!

We start our journey a little before 11am after a hearty breakfast.  We were super excited and the MOST friendly riders on the trail.  I do think we said ‘good morning’, ‘hello’, ‘hi there’  and ‘afternoon’ to half of Greater Chicago!  This was of course in the first 3 hours of the ride.

For some odd reason, it took Chris and I close to 6 hours to finish our trek.  Mind you, we were leisurely riding at a nice Sunday pace and did stop for a couple granola bars, an amazing cookie from Bob’s Market, a push pop and water!

When we got back home, we were exhausted.  Butts were killing us.  Maybe a couple knee twitches and a thirst for a nice cold beer that I have never known!  It was amazing though, we made it…together!

Because….the couple that sweats together, stays together!  😉
